Democratic Rally (DISY), AKEL, and Democratic Party (DIKO) have shifted their focus to the upcoming Aglandjia deputy mayoral race following the election of the new House President, with several prospective candidate names surfacing despite a lack of definitive party decisions.
DISY sources indicate the party will hold internal primary elections to select its official candidate. Formal entries must be submitted this coming Monday, followed by a party ballot on Friday to allow DISY members in Aglandjia to vote for their preferred nominee.
Two current DISY municipal councillors, Prokopis Prokopiou and Christos Liverdos, remain under consideration. Liverdos has been serving as temporary deputy mayor due to securing the highest number of preference votes in the 2024 elections. Sources from DISY headquarters on Pindarou Street note that additional party members are expected to put forward their names on Monday.
DIKO has discussed the potential candidacy of former Aglandjia Mayor Kostas Kortas, though Kortas has yet to formally discuss the prospect with party leadership.
Information obtained by Phileleftheros indicates that the former mayor will meet with the DIKO president on Monday. However, his attendance is slated in his capacity as the president of the DIKO Nicosia district committee rather than as an individual candidate. The meeting will address the broader race, focusing on whether DIKO will field its own candidate, evaluating other party positions, and assessing interested individuals. Kortas previously ran as a DIKO parliamentary candidate in Nicosia, securing 1,177 preference votes.
AKEL is expected to reach its internal decisions this coming Monday, according to reports.
The name of Dr Antri Chatziandreou, a former AKEL parliamentary candidate in Nicosia who drew 3,188 preference votes, has been introduced into discussions within the Aglandjia municipal department. AKEL officials have not commented publicly on the scenario, as internal selection mechanisms and cross-party discussions remain underway. Other figures previously linked to AKEL’s selection process include Evgenia Aletra and Mikaela Kythreoti Mchlapa.
The election for the Aglandjia deputy mayoralty is scheduled to take place on 28 June, with the official submission of candidacies set for 18 June. Only registered citizens residing within the Aglandjia municipal district hold voting rights for this election.
