Paphos reservoir levels top 50% after months of heavy rainfall

Four months of heavy rainfall have pushed Paphos district’s overall reservoir capacity above 50%, with Mavrokolymbos — empty last year due to damage — now standing at 89.8%.

Cyprus’s second-largest dam, Asprokremmos, reached 41.1% capacity by the end of last week, up from 22.8% at the same point last year. Kannavia stands at 51.8%, compared with 24% a year ago.

Three smaller reservoirs in the district — Agia Marina Chrysochous, Argaka and Pomos — overflowed as early as March.

In the Chrysochous area, the Evretos reservoir stands at 49.1%, against 23.2% last year.

The figures are expected to improve further as rain continues to fall in some areas. Officials have cautioned that the gains do not resolve Cyprus’s serious long-term water problem, but farmers and residents have welcomed the improvement.

The completion of repairs to both the Mavrokolymbos dam and the Kouklia desalination plant, damaged in a 2024 fire, has added to a sense of cautious optimism in Paphos ahead of the summer.
