Cash is no longer accepted for rent payments as of today, 1st July 2026, the Tax Department said, with all real estate rentals to be made exclusively with electronic payment.
Renters must pay specifically via:
- Bank Transfer
- Debit/Credit card
- Any other recognised electronic form of payment
This new measure is to be upheld regardless of the amount of rent or usage of the property being rented; whether the property is a residence, business, or other is irrelevant.
In addition to this, rent collectors are unable to accept payment if it is not sent electronically.
Those who do not comply will be fined €300, and legal persons (e.g., corporations) should expect fines between €500 to €1000, to be issued based on the characteristics and turnover of the business.
This development can be found in article 48A of the Tax Verification and Collection Law, established as part of the tax reform.
The tax reform has also ensured that individuals who declare they pay rent are to receive a €2000 tax reduction.
