New scheme to subsidise student housing in walled Nicosia

The Ministry of Interior has launched a call for applications for subsidised student housing within the walled city of Nicosia.

Included in Cyprus’ Recovery and Resilience Plan for the period 2021-2026, this Grants Scheme is funded by the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility.

The scheme aims to provide financial support to individuals or legal entities, owners or tenants of buildings, for the renovation/restoration of their properties, primarily to convert them into student dormitories/rooms.

The main objectives of the scheme, to its purpose, are the social and economic upgrading of the area by attracting students and related investments, enhancing the built environment by contributing to the circular economy and green growth, and providing affordable housing options for students with controlled rent, as determined by the Ministry of Finance.

For converting existing buildings into student dormitories/rooms and for an extension area up to 30% of the existing building, the grant will cover 75% of the eligible expenses of the proposal.

For extension areas beyond 30% of the existing building, the grant will cover 50% of the eligible expenses.

The scheme has a budget of €11.3 million.
