Man arrested for abducting 69-year-old woman and forcing her to ATM

A man threatened a 69-year-old woman in her home in a Nicosia district village on Friday, May 16, forced her into his car, and drove her to a bank where he tried and failed to withdraw money from her account using her card, police said.

The incident began when an unknown man entered the woman’s home and demanded money under threats. She handed over €200 in cash. Later the same day, he returned, again threatened her, and forced her into his vehicle.

At the bank, he attempted to use her credit card at an ATM but was unsuccessful. He then drove her back home.

The woman reported the incident to police the same day. Officers secured evidence and obtained an arrest warrant for a 24-year-old suspect, who was arrested and brought before Nicosia District Court. The court issued a six-day remand order. Yesterday, as that remand expired, the court extended it by a further four days.

Police also arrested a second suspect, aged 40, after evidence emerged linking him to the case. He is due to appear before Nicosia District Court this morning for a remand hearing.

The CID in Morfou is continuing its investigation.
