Larnaca targets 26-litre daily water saving per person in new summer campaign

The Larnaca District Local Government Organisation (DLGO) has launched a summer water conservation campaign targeting a reduction of 26 litres in daily consumption per person across the district, with Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou in attendance at the press conference.

The campaign, named “Larnaca -26,” runs until September and will be promoted across digital and print media, social networks, hotels, summer programmes and local businesses. Although dams are in better condition this year than in 2025, the DLGO said responsible water management remained essential during the summer months. “Through this new campaign, water saving becomes a collective effort with a clear and measurable target,” the DLGO said.

The DLGO is also launching a dedicated digital platform and a live water status indicator on its website, giving residents real-time information on water reserves and progress toward the campaign target. DLGO president Angelos Hadjicharalambous said the platform would give citizens “useful information and practical tips that can be applied in their daily lives, contributing meaningfully to reducing water consumption.”

Panayiotou said water security depended not only on major state infrastructure projects but also on personal responsibility and daily choices. She set out the scale of what the target could achieve: “The challenge for Larnaca: every resident to reduce their daily water consumption by 26 litres. This saving amounts to approximately 9.5 cubic metres of water per person annually. For an average four-person household, this translates into savings of almost 38 cubic metres of water per year. If the target is achieved across the entire Larnaca district, total savings could exceed three million cubic metres of water annually. This is a particularly significant quantity, demonstrating that small changes in everyday life can produce a very large collective result.”

The minister noted that Cyprus’s average daily water consumption stands at approximately 140 litres per person, against an EU average of between 124 and 125 litres. “This gap highlights the room we have to improve our daily habits without affecting our quality of life,” she said. According to Water Development Department calculations cited by the minister, a reduction in consumption of just 10% could contribute decisively to water management and to maintaining available reserves until the next hydrological period.

Panayiotou also handed over 1,000 water flow reducers to the Larnaca Hairdressers Association for distribution to salons across the district, targeting water savings in high-use professional settings.
