Four dogs poisoned in two days as owner says suspect remains unpunished

Four dogs were poisoned within two days in the same neighbourhood in Dali, with one owner saying eight months later the suspect has still not been punished despite being captured on CCTV.

Speaking to Phileleftheros, Andria Kyriakou said her nine-year-old dog, Lilly, died within minutes after consuming poisoned bait in the early hours of August 17, 2025, while she was in the yard of her home.

Kyriakou said the bait was found next to her four-year-old son’s toys, highlighting the potential danger to children.

Later that morning, she said she heard shouting from a nearby house and went to investigate, where she saw another dog, Otto, dead with foam at the mouth.

She added that a neighbour informed her that two more dogs in the area had died the previous day, August 16, also after consuming poisoned bait.

Police were called to the scene, took photographs and informed the owners that one of the dogs would be sent for a post-mortem examination.

According to Kyriakou, officers later returned to the area and collected footage from closed-circuit cameras, which she said recorded the movements of the suspect.

However, she said a search of the suspect’s home was carried out two months later, in October.

Eight months after the incident, Kyriakou said the suspect remains unpunished, raising questions about delays in the handling of the case and expressing concern over how authorities would have responded if the incident had involved her child.

She said she had raised her dog for nine years as part of the family and feared what could have happened if the poisoned bait had been picked up by her young son.

Police told Phileleftheros that the case has been solved and that toxicology results are pending before the suspect is brought before court.

The case has also prompted mobilisation from the Movement of Ecologists-Citizen’s Cooperation.
