Fire services stage major high-rise rescue exercise in Limassol (photos+videos)

Fire services are staging a large-scale rescue and firefighting exercise at a high-rise building in Limassol today, testing their response to a major incident in a tall residential complex.

The exercise is taking place at the 27-storey Limassol Delmar tower at 117-123 Georgiou A’ Street in Germasogeia, with units from the Agios Nikolaos Fire Station responding to a simulated emergency.

The scenario

In the exercise scenario, a fire breaks out at 10:00am in apartment 705 on the seventh floor, with smoke rapidly spreading through stairwells to upper floors.

Residents above the seventh floor report smoke filling corridors and apartments, making the stairwells unusable. Trapped occupants have moved onto balconies, with some showing signs of smoke inhalation.

The fire spreads vertically to the 11th floor, with visible flames and smoke on the building’s exterior. Firefighters are also checking whether anyone is trapped in the lifts.

The exercise tests rescue procedures, evacuation coordination, lift control protocols, and strategies for managing vertical fire spread in high-rise structures.
