The European Commission announced on 16 June 2026 the final results for the quality of bathing waters across the European Union.
Swimming remains one of the most popular recreational activities in Europe. Annual assessments of EU bathing areas reflect the effectiveness of environmental protection measures and help citizens make informed decisions about safe and clean waters.
According to this year’s European Commission report, Cyprus fully complied with the strictest requirements of the EU Bathing Water Directive for the 2025 reference year, meeting all associated obligations.
During the 2025 bathing season, Cyprus achieved a 100% compliance rate, with all 123 monitored sites classified as “excellent quality.” This performance places Cyprus first among EU member states for the fourth consecutive year, followed by Greece at 97.1% and Bulgaria at 96.9%.
From 1 May to 31 October 2025, systematic monitoring was conducted at 123 locations along the coastal zone of the free areas of Cyprus, with at least monthly sampling and one additional test before the start of the bathing season.
Bathing water quality is closely linked to public health and marine environmental protection, while also serving as a key factor for tourism and, by extension, the national economy. The outstanding results further enhance Cyprus’s image as a destination with clean, safe, and high-quality beaches.
The achievement reflects effective collaboration between the Department of Environment, responsible for implementing the directive, the Health Services and Public Health Services, the Government Chemistry Department, and local authorities.
Cyprus continues to demonstrate its commitment to environmental protection and sustainable management of natural resources, ensuring high-quality bathing waters for residents and visitors alike.
