Gunmen kill 12 in attack on Johannesburg settlement, police launch manhunt

At least 12 people were killed and nine injured when gunmen opened fire at an informal settlement east of Johannesburg on Tuesday evening, South African police said on Wednesday.

The attack took place at the Jumpers informal settlement in Cleveland, with police saying more than 10 suspects arrived in a white Toyota Quantum, entered the settlement from two access points and opened fire at multiple locations before fleeing in the same vehicle.

A manhunt for the suspects has been launched. The motive for the attack is not known.

South Africa has one of the world’s highest murder rates, averaging around 60 killings a day.
