A 24-year-old road worker struck by a car while carrying out roadworks on the Limassol–Paphos motorway is in a critical condition at Nicosia General Hospital, where he was transferred last night.
The 37-year-old driver, who tested positive for cocaine in a preliminary drug test, was arrested, questioned and released pending the completion of investigations by Limassol traffic police. Samples were sent for further analysis.
During questioning, the driver said he did not notice the warning signs as he was travelling in the right-hand lane. He told police that at some point he reached down for a water bottle that had fallen to the floor of his vehicle, striking the worker in the process.
A colleague who witnessed the incident tried to pull the 24-year-old to safety but did not reach him in time. The worker was in the middle of the road when the car hit him.
The collision occurred at around 9:40am on Thursday near Sotira. The driver’s vehicle came to a stop on top of a large illuminated flashing arrow.
Ambulance crews arrived promptly and worked to stabilise the worker before he was taken to Limassol General Hospital, where doctors found he had suffered multiple injuries, including serious wounds to his lower limbs.
He was transferred to Nicosia General Hospital last night, where attending doctors described his condition as critical.
