Thermos recalls more than 8 million containers after violent lid ejections blind three people

Thermos has recalled more than 8 million food and water containers after a dangerous lid defect caused violent ejections on opening, injuring multiple consumers and permanently blinding three people, according to Fox Business, citing a US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announcement.

The recall covers approximately 5.8 million King stainless steel food jars and 2.3 million Sportsman food and beverage bottles sold over a period of more than 15 years. Thermos has received 27 reports of lids striking users when opening the containers, three of whom suffered permanent vision loss after being struck in the eye, regulators said.

The containers lack a pressure relief mechanism, allowing pressure to build up when food or liquid is stored inside for an extended period. “If perishable food or beverages are stored in the container for an extended period, the lid can eject violently when opened, which can lead to serious impact injuries and a risk of cuts to the consumer,” the CPSC said.

The recall covers the following models:

  • King stainless steel food jars: SK3000 (16 oz) and SK3020 (24 oz), manufactured before July 2023
  • Sportsman food and beverage bottles: SK3010 (40 oz), all models

“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled food jars and bottles and contact Thermos to receive a free replacement pressure-relief lid or a replacement bottle, depending on the model,” the CPSC said.
