A 25-year-old Italian man from the southern region of Calabria has been placed in quarantine and is being transferred to Rome’s Spallanzani infectious disease hospital for testing after travelling on a KLM flight alongside a woman who later died from a hantavirus infection, ANSA news agency reported on Tuesday.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said there was no sign of a larger outbreak getting under way, though he did not rule out further cases.
“At the moment, there is no sign that we are seeing the start of a larger outbreak, but of course the situation could change and, given the long incubation period of the virus, it’s possible we might see more cases in the coming weeks,” Tedros told reporters in Madrid, where he appeared alongside Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.
France’s Health Minister said there were still unknowns surrounding the virus, including whether it had mutated.
