Uni lecturer in north in court after allegedly posing as doctor

A university lecturer in the north has appeared in court after allegedly posing as a doctor.

The lecturer, a citizen of the Republic of Turkey, who works at the Cyprus International University, reportedly examined patients at the university’s health centre and wrote doctors’ reports, despite not being qualified to do so.

Police say he has been posing as a doctor since 2021.

He was formally charged with “acting contrary to the Turkish Cypriot medical law”.

In court, judge Zehra Yalkut Bilgec banned him from going abroad and ordered that he be released on a 10,000TL (€320) bail provided that a Turkish Cypriot sign a bond of 200,000TL (€6,401) and that he presents himself to his nearest police station once a week.
