UN human rights office calls for tougher regulation of online platforms to protect children

The United Nations Human Rights Office called on Friday for stronger government regulation and oversight of online platforms to better protect children, describing the issue as an “urgent priority.”

“Enhancing protection of children online is an urgent priority that we need to make sure not only gets done — but that it gets done right,” UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said in a statement.

He added that technology companies must embed child safety into their platforms by design.
