Cyprus’s Anti-Drugs Unit (YKAN) arrested two men, aged 29 and 31, and seized quantities of ecstasy, cocaine and methamphetamine after an operation in the Nicosia district yesterday.
Just after 1pm yesterday, YKAN officers tried to stop a car driven by the 29-year-old on the Alambra-Mosfiloti road, as part of an investigation into information they were pursuing.
The 29-year-old rammed his car into two police vehicles and kept driving. Police later located him in the Marki area, where he got into a second vehicle driven by the 31-year-old.
The pair tried to escape the checkpoint, crashing their car into a police vehicle before being stopped. During the stop, the 29-year-old attacked police officers, who arrested him. After officers found a knife in the car driven by the 31-year-old, he was arrested too.
Searches followed in the area. Acting on the information under investigation, YKAN officers found the pair had hidden drugs in an open field and at a second location in the Alambra area. They seized:
- 170 ecstasy pills, with a gross weight of 85 grams
- A quantity of white powder resembling cocaine, with a gross weight of 40 grams
- A quantity of white crystalline substance resembling methamphetamine, with a gross weight of 400 grams
- Two precision electronic scales bearing traces of white cocaine powder
Searches continued at a residence in the area where, according to the information under examination, the two men live. Officers found and seized €4,150 in cash, a mobile phone, a tablet computer and two drones for examination.
Arrest warrants were issued against the 29-year-old and the 31-year-old, under which they were arrested and remanded in custody. They are being investigated for drug possession, possession with intent to supply, money laundering from illegal activities, and traffic offences.
