Student kills four, wounds 20 in Turkey school shooting

A middle school student shot dead four people and wounded 20 others at his school in the southern Turkish province of Kahramanmaraş on Wednesday, using weapons taken from his father and concealed in a backpack, the local governor said. The attacker also died.

Governor Mükerrem Ünlüer told reporters that a teacher was among those killed. The shooter had brought his father’s weapons to school hidden in a backpack before opening fire. No further details on the circumstances of the attack or the attacker’s motive were immediately available.

The Kahramanmaraş attack is the second school shooting in Turkey in as many days. The day before, a former student opened fire at the Ahmet Koyuncu Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in the Siverek district of south-eastern Turkey, injuring at least 16 people before killing himself after being cornered by police.

School shootings are very rare in Turkey.
