A strong gas-like smell spreading across a large area of Germasogeia since Monday midday has prompted an immediate response from authorities, with the Fire Service carrying out investigations to locate the source.
Germasogeia Deputy Mayor Christos Papamichael told philenews the smell was particularly strong, and that the Fire Service was working to identify its origin. He said a number of vehicles had already been checked but a gas leak did not appear to be the cause.
The smell covers a wide radius, from Christakis Kranou Street and surrounding roads to the entire coastal front, Papamichael said.
According to information he received from the Fire Service, the possibility that the smell is coming from a ship is being examined. The Cyprus Ports Authority has also been notified.
In a social media post, Papamichael wrote that “the relevant services are already on the ground and checks are being carried out to locate the source of the problem. We ask the public to be patient until there is a clear picture and an official update from the relevant authorities.”
