A second tourist from Israel, aged 22, has been placed under seven-day detention, having allegedly been involved in the brawl that preceded the stabbing of three Cypriots outside a bar in Ayia Napa. The alleged attacker, a 21-year-old, has been held since yesterday under eight-day detention as a suspect for attempted murder.
The 22-year-old Israeli, a friend of the alleged attacker, was injured in the head during the brawl and remains hospitalised at Famagusta Hospital, where Famagusta District Court convened to issue the detention order. He too is a suspect in the attempted murder case.
It is noted that a 22-year-old security guard is being treated in hospital with knife wounds, having been stabbed in the abdomen and undergone surgery, with his condition described as serious. The other two injured, aged 25 and 41, have been discharged.
What investigators have established so far
CID Famagusta investigators have located the knife and are examining CCTV footage in an effort to establish what preceded the fight on Louka Louka street.
According to police sources, it has so far been established that the two Israelis had an intense argument around 4:30am on Wednesday, which escalated into a clash with a 41-year-old Cypriot, one of the injured.
Security guards then rushed to the scene, according to testimony held by police, aiming to stop the fight and protect the 41-year-old, whom they knew.
Under circumstances that remain unclear, the 21-year-old Israeli, who was in a state of frenzy, is alleged to have drawn a knife and stabbed all three.
The two Israelis will be questioned, while statements will also be taken from the injured once their health allows. At this stage, statements are being taken from people who were in the area at the time of the fight.
