Sandy case file reaches Attorney General, Savvides tells parliament

Attorney General Giorgos Savvides confirmed on Wednesday that the police file on the Sandy case is now with his office, telling parliament that investigators have completed their work and passed the matter on for a decision on possible prosecution.

Savvides was responding to a question from an MP in the House. He said the file is currently in his office, explaining that police first completed the initial stage of their investigation, after which his office instructed that it be studied to establish any responsibilities. The file has since been completed so a decision can be taken on whether to pursue prosecution measures.

As previously announced, the instructions given to police concerned the alleged leak of fake news, forgery, and the circulation of forged documents.

The Sandy case originated with publications by journalist Makarios Drousiotis, who made a series of allegations concerning public figures, including corruption and sexual misconduct. The messages at the centre of the case were purportedly exchanged between Sandy and former Supreme Court judge Michalakis Christodoulou, who has publicly acknowledged knowing Sandy but denied all allegations of wrongdoing.

Bank searches subsequently found no evidence of funds moved abroad, and the Council of Ministers ordered all material sent to Europol for forensic examination.

Police later announced that the messages were fabricated and forged and that the information they contained was false, a conclusion Drousiotis has publicly rejected, while continuing to maintain that his own messages are authentic.

The case has since moved through several institutional stages, with Police Chief Themistos Arnaoutis briefing Justice Minister Costas Fytiris, who in turn updated the Council of Ministers, before the file’s arrival at the Law Office of the Republic.
