Protesters demand resignations of top state prosecutors after Mafia State corruption report

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the Law Office on Monday evening to protest against institutional corruption, following the official delivery of a scathing corruption report into former President Anastasiades and other state officials.

The demonstration, jointly organised by opposition parties AKEL and Volt Cyprus, was triggered by the release of a 3,000-page investigative report compiled by the Independent Authority Against Corruption, based on the book Mafia State by former presidential aide and journalist Makarios Drousiotis.

The document, handed over to the Law Office on Monday morning, reportedly flags potential criminal liabilities for 15 individuals linked to systemic corruption during the former administration of President Nicos Anastasiades.

Protestors are demanding the immediate resignations of Attorney-General George Savvides and Deputy Attorney-General Savvas Angelides.

The opposition groups argue that the current leadership of the Law Office cannot be trusted to oversee an unbiased investigation into findings that directly implicate the previous administration under which both officials were appointed.

They are calling for an entirely independent prosecution process to ensure those implicated are brought to justice.

Addressing the crowd under tight police supervision, AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou heavily criticised the main opposition party, Democratic Rally (DISY), stating that within their political vernacular, institutional grift and underhanded deals are mislabelled as “investments.”

Meanwhile, Volt Cyprus spokesperson Pieros Karoullas reiterated his party’s stance, emphasising that the findings present a historic opportunity to finally dismantle deeply entrenched corruption within the state apparatus.

The Law Office confirmed receipt of the report and the extensive evidence files on Monday morning.

In response to the growing political fallout, former President Nicos Anastasiades has scheduled a comprehensive press conference for Tuesday, 23 June, to address the allegations and present his public defense.
