Police warning: Fraudsters seek remote access to devices

Police have warned the public to be especially cautious over a scam in which fraudsters ask for access to mobile phones or computers in an attempt to steal money from bank accounts.

The fraudsters call citizens pretending to represent a financial transactions and payments platform, police said.

They falsely claim that other people have gained access to the victim’s mobile phone and that money in their bank accounts may be at risk of theft.

Police said the callers then ask citizens to give them remote access to their devices through a specific application, supposedly so they can take protective measures.

The main aim of the fraudsters is to gain access to citizens’ bank accounts and steal money, police said.

Following new complaints, police urged the public to be particularly cautious, stressing that such calls are fraudulent.

Police said people should avoid giving anyone remote access to electronic devices or access to online accounts.

Personal information and bank account details should be protected and never disclosed to anyone, police added.

Citizens were also urged to always verify any calls or messages they receive.

Police said such checks should be carried out through the official and published communication channels of the organisations involved.
