Parents appear in court after two boys found dead in car in Dhekelia

A man and his partner appeared in handcuffs before the Dhekelia Sovereign Base Areas court on Monday on suspicion of negligence in connection with the deaths of two boys, aged eight and ten, whose bodies were found in their father’s car on Sunday in Xylophagou.

SBA authorities are expected to request the remand of the two suspects.

The boys had been in the vehicle for several hours, according to findings. Emergency services broke the windows and rear of the car to reach them but ambulance crews were unable to save them. The vehicle was parked in a field beside the apartment block where the father and his partner lived.

SBA Police are seeking testimony from neighbours and examining CCTV footage from the area. Investigators are looking into why the two brothers were left unsupervised and how they came to be inside the car. According to information reaching investigators, they are also examining whether a mechanical fault may have caused the children to become trapped.

The boys had arrived in Cyprus in mid-May to spend the summer holidays with their father, who lives and works here. Witnesses said the father left for work in Limassol in the early hours of the previous morning, after which his partner also left for work, leaving the children alone in the apartment.

Post-mortems on both children are to be carried out during the day.
