Paphos Criminal Court sentenced a 44-year-old man to eight years in prison today after finding him guilty of raping a 63-year-old woman.
The man had met the complainant through his work, carrying out various repairs at her home from time to time. On previous occasions, she had found his behaviour inappropriate but had never reported it to police. This culminated in her rape in March 2023, when she called him back to her home to carry out renovation work.
According to what was presented in court, he then closed the curtains and sexually assaulted her. She tried to resist but was unable to stop him, and he went on to have intercourse with her against her will.
With the encouragement of friends, the complainant reported the assault to the Welfare Office and police, who acted immediately on the case. The man was arrested and convicted yesterday of her rape.
The court’s decision noted that evidence had been collected from the scene of the assault, and that the necessary tests had been carried out by the forensic genetics laboratory of the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics.
