More than one in five workers in Europe — 21.3% — regularly work weekends, according to updated Eurostat data analysed by Euronews, with rates highest in the Balkans and the Mediterranean.
Greece records the highest rate, with 41% of both employees and self-employed workers regularly working on Saturdays and Sundays. Bosnia-Herzegovina follows at 33%, while Malta, Cyprus and North Macedonia each record 32%.
Rates are considerably lower in northern and eastern Europe. In Lithuania, only 4% of workers work weekends, according to Euronews, rising to 7% in Hungary and 7.5% in Poland.
