A car parked in a makeshift shed adjoining a four-storey building in the Agioi Omologites area of Nicosia caught fire in the early hours of Friday, causing extensive damage to neighbouring premises, a ground-floor gym and nearby shops.
The car, belonging to a 23-year-old woman, was completely destroyed. The fire was reported at 01:10 and brought under control at 02:40 by Fire Service crews, who arrived with two vehicles from the Acropolis Fire Station “Lochias Spyros Ttantis.”
The blaze and heat caused extensive damage to an adjacent premises and its contents, as well as to part of a gym and its equipment on the ground floor of the building. Windows and shop displays in neighbouring businesses were shattered, and the building’s exterior paintwork was affected by smoke.
Fire Service personnel searched the entire building for residents, evacuating one person safely from a third-floor apartment.
Police attended the scene and initial findings indicated the fire may have been set deliberately. The scene was cordoned off this morning for further investigations.
