Nicosia residents report man approaching strangers for €20 cash using broken-down car story

Phileleftheros has received a series of complaints in recent days about a young man reportedly approaching people across Nicosia and asking for €20 in cash, claiming his car has broken down.

The complaints describe a young Greek Cypriot man who appears agitated and sweating, and who allegedly asks for exactly €20 in cash, citing a broken-down vehicle as the reason he needs the money urgently.

He reportedly promises to return the money — either himself or through a friend — via Revolut at a later stage. According to all complaints received, no repayment was made in any of the cases.

The pattern described in the complaints to Phileleftheros matches reports circulating on social media from content creators who say they have encountered the same individual.

Incidents have reportedly been recorded in the city centre, Latsia and Strovolos. In some cases the man allegedly asked for the money to pay for a taxi home.

In another reported case he allegedly claimed he needed €20 to pay for roadside assistance and a tow truck that had collected his vehicle.

The common thread across all reports is a young man who presents himself as distressed, always requests €20 in cash, and uses a variation of the broken-down car explanation.
