Mass food poisoning at Limassol wedding sends 18 to hospital as health authorities investigate

More than 70 guests at a Limassol wedding reception last weekend fell ill with food poisoning symptoms, with 18 hospitalised — among them children.

The Ministry of Health’s Health Services has launched an investigation after 39 Limassol guests and approximately 35 from Paphos reported symptoms, with 15 and three respectively requiring hospitalisation.

Irodotos Irodotou, head of the Health Services, told philenews that food and water sample analysis from the venue is ongoing, alongside interviews with symptomatic guests, to establish whether specific foods can be linked to the pathogens that may have caused the incident.

The couple told investigators that around 50 guests had shown symptoms from the outset. Irodotou said his department acted immediately upon being notified.

“We immediately launched investigations, as well as conducting personal interviews with the affected guests. An on-site inspection was carried out, food samples were taken, and the operation of the suspect premises has been suspended,” he said.

Health authorities are also investigating a second food poisoning incident at a separate venue, and are examining whether the two cases are connected.
