Limassol election candidate arrested for punching assistant referee

A 38-year-old man featured on a party’s electoral list in Limassol has been arrested for allegedly punching an assistant referee during a football match yesterday.

The suspect is currently in custody and is expected to be brought before the Larnaca District Court for a detention order.

The incident

The assault occurred during a match between Rotsidis Mammari and APOP Parekklisia as part of the STOK integration league.

According to reports, an unidentified individual threw a plastic bottle that struck the assistant referee near the end of the game. Simultaneously, the second individual, the parliamentary candidate, entered the field of play and attacked the official, punching him.

The match was abandoned following the incident. The assistant referee was taken to Larnaca General Hospital, where he underwent medical examinations before being discharged.
