Ledra Street: Woman caught with untaxed tobacco

Customs officers seized untaxed tobacco products found in a woman’s bag and on her body at the Ledra Street crossing, the Customs Department said.

According to the department, officers carried out the check on Sunday during routine inspections linked to the enforcement of the Green Line Regulation at the crossing.

The woman had come to the department’s attention dozens of times before in cases involving tobacco products from the occupied areas.

During the search of her personal bag and a body search that followed, officers found she was again carrying tobacco products. Their packaging did not carry the required health warnings in Greek and Turkish, an indication that they were untaxed.

Customs officers counted and seized five cartons of 200 cigarettes each, as well as rolling tobacco packages with a total weight of 2kg and 750g.

The department also seized the woman’s vehicle.

The woman was arrested for offences committed in the act, but was later released after her request for an out-of-court settlement was accepted. She paid €1,270 to settle the tobacco-related offences.
