Isotita, the union representing postal delivery officers, has announced on Friday the decision to suspend the strike planned for January 2.
The president of Isotita’s post office delivery branch Antonis Panayi said in a letter that the Cyprus postal service “is intentioned to change the current regime of overtime work for postal delivery officers.”
As a result, Isotita decided to suspend the planned strike.
However, the union also said in its latter that certain issues with the postal service “need clarification through dialogue in the coming days”, stressing that any clarifications must be provided in writing.
Earlier this month, Panayi notified the general directorate of the postal services of the ongoing issues in June 2023 through a letter and again in November 2023, seeking a meeting to resolve the differences.
According to Panayi, statistical data from released by the road transport department in 2022 indicate that 11 per cent of post deliveries have accidents annually.
Moreover, he noted that statistics from 2012 to 2023 show a 100 per cent increase in the number of vehicles on the roads, increasing the risk of accidents for postal distributors.
Panayi further added that based on statistics, peak hours have increased from four to eight hours from 2012 to date, also escalating the risk of accidents.
