Heavy rain and storms hit Cyprus as unsettled weather set to continue through weekend

Rain and storms are sweeping across parts of Cyprus just days before the official start of summer, with videos circulating online showing water pooling on roads and in yards in Larnaca, Paphos and Limassol.

The Department of Meteorology said a weak low-pressure system and an unstable air mass are affecting the region. This afternoon will be partly cloudy with localised rain or storms, mainly in the mountains, the interior and the east. Hail is possible during storms. Winds will blow from the south-west to north-west, strong to very strong at five to six Beaufort, with gusts on the southern coasts reaching six to seven Beaufort. The sea will be rough.

Tonight, increased cloud cover in the west may bring isolated showers. Winds will ease to light to moderate, three to four Beaufort, reaching up to five Beaufort on the coasts. The sea will remain rough. Temperatures will drop to 14°C inland, around 16°C on the coasts and 9°C on the highest peaks.

Tomorrow, Thursday, will be partly cloudy with isolated showers or storms, mainly after midday in the mountains and the south-east. Hail remains possible. Winds will blow south-west to north-west at moderate to strong, four to five Beaufort, with the sea slight to rough. Temperatures will reach 28°C inland, around 26°C on the southern and eastern coasts, around 23°C on the western and northern coasts and 18°C on the highest peaks.

The unsettled pattern will continue through the weekend. Friday and Saturday will be periodically cloudy with localised rain and isolated storms, mainly after midday in the mountains, the interior and the east. Sunday will bring isolated rain, with storms and hail not ruled out. Temperatures on Friday will remain similar to Thursday, before dipping on Saturday in the interior and mountains with little change on the coasts, staying below average climatic values.
