Government plans independent criminal investigators for Mafia State report

The government intends to appoint an independent criminal investigator or investigators to examine the Independent Authority Against Corruption’s report on the “Mafia Sta“Mafia State” case, Government Spokesman Constantinos Letymbiotis said on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters at the Presidential Palace, Letymbiotis said the Council of Ministers plans to make the appointment after the full report is first forwarded by the authority to the Law Office.

He said the move aims to support the investigative process, taking into account the need for a full examination of the issues cited in the authority’s announcement and within the legal and institutional framework.

Letymbiotis said the decision depends on the steps that will follow once the full report is duly sent to the Law Office, while also taking into account Wednesday’s announcement by the Law Office.

The government, he said, is acting with full respect for the Constitution, the powers of each institution, the independence of the competent judicial authorities and the presumption of innocence.

Letymbiotis said the government’s position is clear: every serious reference included in the report must receive the proper and full investigation through the competent institutional procedures, without any departure from the rule of law.

He added that the government’s determination to address corruption is firm, as is its commitment to strengthening transparency, accountability and public trust in institutions.
