Foot-and-mouth cases reach 101 as three more farms confirmed positive

Cyprus has confirmed three new foot-and-mouth disease units, bringing the total number of infected holdings to 101, the Veterinary Services said on Saturday.

The new confirmations comprise one sheep and goat unit in Dromolaxia-Meneou, one cattle unit in Geri, and one pig unit in Palaiometocho, located near the first pig unit where a case was detected.

Sampling, tracing and laboratory testing are continuing across holdings within infected livestock zones, the Veterinary Services said.

The 101 infected units break down as 13 cattle units, nine in Larnaca and four in Nicosia; 86 sheep and goat units, 62 in Larnaca and 24 in Nicosia; and two pig units in western Nicosia district, in Palaiometocho.

Culling and assessment procedures are continuing in both Nicosia and Larnaca, the Veterinary Services added.

The second phase of vaccination has reached 73.5% of the cattle population and 58.5% of the sheep and goat population, the Veterinary Services said. Among pig units within the three- and ten-kilometre infected zones, 94.73% have been vaccinated to date.
