A major fire passed through the gardens of homes and affected a farm building in Pyrga, Larnaca district, after breaking out shortly after midday.
Forestry Department spokesman Glafkos Kyriakou told philenews that the Astrapi emergency response plan was activated immediately and five aircraft were deployed to tackle the blaze.
“This is a major incident,” Kyriakou said, although he expressed hope that the rapid response by firefighting crews had prevented the worst.
“The fire passed through the gardens of homes and affected a farm building,” he added.
The Forestry Department sent 11 vehicles and two tracked vehicles to the area, which falls under its operational responsibility.
Fire Service crews from Larnaca and Nicosia are also supporting the operation with four fire engines.
The fire was brought fully under control shortly after 4 pm, the Forestry Department said.
The blaze burned 10 hectares of pine trees, low wild vegetation, reed beds and dry grass.
Forty Forestry Department personnel took part in the operation with 12 fire engines, two bulldozers and two water tankers.
Ten Fire Service personnel also responded with four fire engines, alongside volunteers.
Five aircraft operated by the Republic assisted the firefighting effort.
