Elderly woman reunited with €30,000 and gold sovereigns left on Greek bus

An elderly woman in Greece was reunited with a bag containing €30,000, gold coins, and jewellery on Monday after she accidentally left it on a public bus.

The incident occurred on the 856 bus route running between Egaleo and Dafne, according to state broadcaster ERT. The passenger disembarked the vehicle without realising she had left the bag behind.

Another passenger spotted the item shortly after and alerted the driver. The driver requested the bag be placed at the front of the bus, assuming the owner would soon come looking for it.

Within minutes, the driver received an alert from the OSY coordination centre asking if a bag had been found. It was only then that he was informed of the bag’s highly valuable contents.

The driver later said he had only glanced at the bag and seen fruit inside, unaware that it also contained €30,000 in cash along with gold sovereigns and jewellery.

The woman only realised the bag was missing once she arrived home and told her daughter. Her daughter immediately contacted the transport authorities to track down the vehicle.

The bag was returned to the owner via the relevant authorities. Officials noted the situation could have ended differently without the quick and honest reaction of both the fellow passenger and the driver.
