Dust, near 30s and storms make up Labour Day weekend

It might be somewhat bizarre circumstances, but that’s how May finds the weather in Cyprus, dusty, muddy and showery, with the possibility of storms in many areas and even snow on Sunday with similar conditions set to persist through to Tuesday.

A low pressure system is affecting the area, with a cold air mass gradually expected to take hold over the weekend. Harmful dust returns to the atmosphere, adding to the murky, hazy setting, firmly not deciding whether to make a return to early spring or forge ahead with the summer.

Fine skies today initially but from noon onwards, isolated showers and storms are expected mainly on the mountains, as winds turn light variable force three, later light to moderate southwesterly to northwesterly, force three to four and in coastal regions, strong force four to five over calm to slight seas.

Temperatures will rise to 28 degrees Celsius inland, 23 in western coastal regions, 25 in the rest of the coastal areas and 18 on the mountains.

Clear skies tonight initially, with low cloud forming later in the evening and thin mist at down. Winds will be light force three over calm to slight seas. Temperatures will drop to 14 degrees Celsius inland and in coastal regions and eight on the mountains.

A showery setting continues tomorrow, mostly during the evening when storms are also expected. Sunday and Monday will see such conditions persisting, with the possibility of either hail or even snow on the highest reaches of the Troodos mountains, accompanied by strong winds.

There will be a significant drop in temperatures by Sunday, much lower than the seasonal average.
