Cyprus weather warning: Yellow and orange alerts as heat hits 44C

The Department of Meteorology issued two consecutive warnings on Wednesday, covering unusually high overnight minimum temperatures and extreme daytime highs forecast for Thursday.

The warning, issued on Wednesday by the Department of Meteorology, first covers a yellow-level alert for elevated overnight minimum temperatures. It runs from 9pm on Wednesday until 6am on Thursday. The department said minimum temperatures in inland areas will not fall below 28 degrees overnight, while coastal areas will not fall below 26 degrees.

A second, orange-level warning follows for extreme maximum temperatures on Thursday, running from noon until 5pm. The department forecasts maximum temperatures could reach around 44 degrees in inland areas and around 33 degrees in higher mountain regions.
