Cyprus activated its CY-Alert emergency warning system on Tuesday, enabling authorities to send real-time alerts directly to mobile phones in affected areas.
Alerts reach all compatible mobile devices within a designated zone regardless of network provider or SIM card origin, and will override a phone’s silent mode. Recipients do not need an internet connection or active mobile data. Each alert carries a distinctive warning sound and strong vibration, along with clear instructions on the nature of the emergency and recommended protective action or evacuation steps.
The system uses Cell Broadcast technology, which sends alerts directly from mobile antennas to all devices within a selected geographic area without being affected by network congestion — distinguishing it from standard SMS. Cyprus joins the European public warning ecosystem as the 16th country in Europe to implement the system under the EU-Alert standard.
Trial notifications will run from June 2 to June 15 in selected communities, clearly marked “Test Test Test” or “Exercise Exercise Exercise,” indicating no real emergency and no action is required. The first tests took place on Tuesday in the communities of Pissouri and Moniatis. A nationwide test covering a missing person scenario is also planned.
To receive alerts, users must update their devices to the latest Android or iOS software. A dedicated helpline on 1450 is available for technical guidance on phone settings.
