Temperatures are expected to reach 40°C inland each day through Wednesday, with the Meteorological Department considering daily yellow warnings for extreme heat.
Meteorological officer Matthaios Papadakis said inland temperatures would climb to around 40°C during the four days, with warnings issued depending on prevailing conditions.
The first yellow warning for high temperatures was issued on Saturday afternoon.
Papadakis said temperatures were above seasonal averages but that Cyprus was not experiencing a heatwave, which is also assessed based on humidity and wind conditions.
“Under these temperatures, we issue a yellow warning for high temperatures inland. Roughly the same weather conditions will remain on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday,” he said.
Humidity levels are generally expected to remain low, except during the evening along the coast, where light fog and low cloud may form.
Papadakis said temperatures had previously remained close to seasonal averages this summer, but were now gradually beginning to rise.
Seasonal low pressure is affecting the region.
Sunday night will be mainly clear, although increased low cloud is expected to form locally along the coast. Light fog may also develop in southeastern areas during the early morning hours.
Winds will blow mainly from the northwest to northeast at force 3, while the sea will be calm to slightly rough. Temperatures will fall to around 23°C inland and along the coast and 19°C in the higher mountains.
Monday will remain mainly clear. Winds will blow mainly from the southwest to northwest at force 3 to 4, gradually strengthening locally to force 5 in exposed areas.
Temperatures will rise to 40°C inland, around 31°C on the southwestern and western coasts, 34°C along the remaining coastal areas and 30°C in the higher mountains.
The weather will remain mainly clear on Tuesday and Wednesday, while locally increased cloud is expected on Thursday afternoon.
Temperatures are not forecast to change significantly through Thursday and will remain above seasonal averages.
The highest temperature recorded in Nicosia on Sunday was 39°C, compared with 34°C at Larnaca Airport, 33°C in Limassol, 30°C at Paphos Airport, 34°C in Frenaros, 28°C in Prodromos and 34°C in Polis Chrysochous.
