Cyprus pays significantly more than the EU average for dairy products and oils but less for meat, vegetables and fruit, according to Eurostat data for 2025.
The price index for milk, cheese and eggs in Cyprus stood at 127.1 units, against an EU-21 average of 99.9 units — 28.8% above the European benchmark. Greece posted the second highest index in this category among EU-21 countries at 129.9, followed by Bulgaria at 126.2. By comparison, Spain recorded 95.3, Poland 92.7, Germany 96.1, the Czech Republic 97.2, the Netherlands 99.3 and Belgium 100.3.
Cyprus also recorded above-average prices for oils and fats, with an index of 113.4 against an EU-21 average of 98.9, a gap of 14.14%. Latvia posted the highest index in this category across the EU at 145.1, followed by Estonia at 127.2. Greece stood at 107.5, Portugal at 95.9, Poland at 94.3 and Spain at 73.2 — the lowest in the EU.
For bread and cereals, Cyprus was broadly in line with the European average, recording 104.2 units against an EU-21 average of 103.3. Greece matched Cyprus exactly at 104.2. Denmark was the most expensive in this category at 136.1, followed by Luxembourg at 128.8 and Austria at 120.4. Bulgaria was the cheapest at 81.4, ahead of the Czech Republic at 87.1, Poland at 88.9 and the Netherlands at 89.9.
Cyprus was cheaper than the EU average for fruit, vegetables and meat. The fruit and nuts index stood at 95 units against an EU-21 average of 104.2, with France the most expensive in the EU at 125.1 and Romania the cheapest. Vegetables came in at 90.6 against an EU-21 average of 101.9, with Denmark the most expensive and Romania the cheapest in the EU. Meat was the category where Cyprus diverged most sharply from the European norm, recording 85.5 units against an EU-21 average of 106 — with Luxembourg the most expensive at 137 and Germany at 112.3, while Portugal at 87.9 was among the cheaper countries alongside Cyprus.
Fish prices in Cyprus were slightly above the EU-21 average, with an index of 103.2 against 100.7. Austria recorded the highest fish price index among the comparator countries at 123.5, followed by Greece at 112.7, Denmark at 103.5 and Portugal at 95.4.
