Construction industry remains in turmoil

A year after the commencement of negotiations before the Conciliation Service of the Ministry of Labor for the renewal of the collective agreement in the construction industry, there is no agreement.

The trade unions are demanding a return to pre-2013 labor rights, while employers want newly hired specialized employees to be recruited at the respective national minimum wage. In other words, lower than the minimum set by the collective agreement for construction workers.

The trade unions are considering officially declaring an impasse and are preparing for mobilizations, while on the other side, employers are looking for more personnel from third countries.

To prevent a head-on collision, the Minister intervened last Thursday and secured the consent of trade unions and contractors to return to the Conciliation Service.
