A report of a fire at a supermarket put the Fire Service on alert in Nicosia, but crews later found a carbon dioxide leak from a refrigeration system.
Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis said two fire engines from Lakatamia station responded to the incident.
When crews arrived, they found that CO2 was leaking from a refrigeration system serving cold-storage units in the supermarket’s underground car park.
No fire had broken out, the Fire Service said.
Supermarket technicians stopped the leak.
Firefighters checked all areas of the supermarket and no one was placed at risk, according to Kettis.
Supermarket staff had already carried out a precautionary evacuation of employees and customers.
