President Nikos Christodoulides received a Chevron delegation at the Presidential Palace on Wednesday, telling its representatives that internal procedures related to an agreement on Cypriot natural gas are close to completion.
According to a press release by the Presidency, Christodoulides told the delegation, led by Javier La Rosa, that international and regional developments made it even more urgent to accelerate the implementation of Cyprus’s energy plans.
He said advancing those plans was of particular importance both for the wider region and for the European Union, at a time when energy security, source diversification and European energy autonomy are at the top of the EU agenda.
Christodoulides noted that the issue had also featured in discussions at the informal European Council held in Cyprus the previous week, and underlined the geostrategic importance of the Eastern Mediterranean for the EU’s energy security and outlook.
He added that internal procedures are expected to be completed within the coming weeks, with Cabinet decisions anticipated as part of the planned course of action.
The President also said the issue was discussed with the Egyptian President on the sidelines of the informal European Council, which he said confirmed the importance of regional cooperation in advancing specific energy projects and linking the region’s energy outlook with Europe’s needs.
