The Nicosia District Local Government Organisation (DLGO) is installing 72,000 smart water meters across Nicosia that will detect leaks at properties instantly and alert consumers by SMS, allowing them to act before receiving an inflated bill.
Under the current system, a meter reader visits properties every two months to record consumption, meaning a fault that goes unnoticed can run for two months before the consumer sees an unusually high bill. According to the source, such cases occur daily. Smart meters will eliminate this problem.
The meters will connect continuously to the DLGO system via low-intensity internet provided by Cyta through its substations. When the system detects unusually high water consumption at a property, it will trigger an alert and send an SMS to the consumer, who can then call a plumber or check for a visible fault themselves.
The installation is being carried out in collaboration with the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (Cyta). The DLGO will present the capabilities of the new meters at a press conference, for which no date has been announced.
The Nicosia DLGO said it considers the replacement of conventional water meters with smart devices a significant part of its strategic planning, forming part of its digital transformation programme aimed at improving services and managing water resources more effectively.
