The Sovereign Base Areas Police are stepping up road patrols and warning beachgoers to protect their valuables ahead of what is expected to be a busy public holiday long weekend.
Deputy Divisional Commander in Dhekelia, Acting Superintendent Marcos Petrou, said teams in both the eastern and western SBAs would increase their presence on the roads to prevent accidents.
“Public holidays always lead to more people on the roads and with that, it brings an increased risk of accidents, so our officers will be on patrol to ensure that public safety is maintained,” he said.
Petrou also urged beachgoers to leave valuables at home or lock them out of sight in their cars. “At this time of year, when more people are visiting the beach, it brings an increased risk of opportunistic crime, which can lead to theft from cars or theft of valuables left unattended,” he said.
“Our advice is to not take expensive items to the beach with you as they are regularly left unattended when people go into the sea.”
