A dead dolphin that washed up on a beach near Paphos airport on April 5 has remained there for 10 days, raising questions and criticism over the response of the authorities.
The carcass is still lying on the shore despite visible deterioration caused by prolonged exposure to the elements, with the competent services and authorities yet to attend the scene, as they usually do in similar cases.
Although it was initially thought that no action was taken during the first two days because the animal was found on a Sunday, no steps were taken during the following week either, and the dolphin remains in place.
The sight has drawn complaints in Paphos, with critics saying it reflects badly on the area and on the level of respect that should be shown in such cases.
The dolphin was found dead on the morning of April 5 by amateur fishermen who regularly fish at the stretch of coast outside Paphos airport.
They immediately informed the police and the fisheries department, while the local authority was also notified.
Although those involved had indicated that authorities would go to the scene the following morning because of the public holiday, the carcass was still lying at the same spot 10 days later.
The case has sparked further concern in Paphos because it was the second dead dolphin found in the district’s waters within two weeks.
