Cyprus’s electricity supply is expected to be extremely tight during evening peak hours, between 18:00 and 22:00, today and tomorrow, according to the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSOC).
The TSOC warned of a possible failure to meet demand due to simultaneous outages at Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) generating units at the Dhekelia and Vasilikos power stations.
TSOC said EAC made intensive efforts to bring an additional unit at Dhekelia online, but this did not prove possible, leaving available production levels limited.
High temperatures are expected to continue tomorrow, with the heatwave forecast to ease from Friday, when temperatures are expected to fall below 40 degrees Celsius.
Appeal for electricity savings
Peak demand tomorrow is estimated to reach 1,350 MW at midday and 1,100 MW in the evening, while the availability of generating units is expected to remain at today’s levels.
TSOC has appealed to the public to use electrical appliances sparingly, in order to save energy during the evening peak hours.
TSOC said it will manage the situation guided by its top priority, “the safe operation of Cyprus’s electricity system.”
