A 44-year-old special constable was suspended on the instructions of Deputy Police Chief Panikos Stavrou after being involved in a three-car collision in Nicosia and testing over the legal alcohol limit.
The crash occurred at about 8am on Wednesday at the roundabout outside Nicosia General Hospital.
Police said the off-duty officer’s car, under circumstances still being investigated, struck a vehicle travelling ahead of him, driven by a 43-year-old woman.
The impact pushed her car forward into a third vehicle driven by a 38-year-old man.
The cars driven by the officer and the woman caught fire and were completely destroyed, while the third vehicle sustained damage to its rear.
Fire service crews extinguished the blaze.
All three drivers were taken by ambulance to Nicosia General Hospital, where they received first aid.
Breathalyser tests were carried out on all three drivers. The special constable recorded a final reading of 59 microgrammes, compared with the legal limit of 22 microgrammes.
Further checks found that he had also been driving without a valid insurance certificate.
Both criminal and disciplinary investigations are being conducted against him.
