Five arrested after attacks on police in Nicosia and Famagusta

Police arrested five people overnight in Nicosia and Famagusta districts over offences including assaults on officers, resisting lawful arrest, public insults and other related offences.

In Nicosia, officers from the Ledra police substation arrested an 18-year-old and a 22-year-old in two separate incidents, police said.

The 18-year-old was arrested after a pursuit over his alleged involvement in a fight, while the 22-year-old was detained for causing a disturbance.

Police said both men assaulted officers during their arrests and were subsequently detained over offences committed in the officers’ presence.

In Famagusta district, officers from the Crime Prevention Unit intervened in a fight at a nightclub at around 3:15 am.

Two men, aged 22 and 24, were arrested, while three police officers were injured during the intervention.

The injured officers were taken to Famagusta General Hospital, where they received first aid and were later discharged.

The two suspects are expected to appear before a court on Sunday for a remand hearing.

In a separate incident in the same district, a 19-year-old who was under the influence of alcohol was arrested after allegedly assaulting two officers during a police patrol.

Police said the incidents showed that officers were required to deal with high-risk situations daily to protect life, property and public safety and to maintain public order.

The force said any assault on an officer carrying out their duties constituted an attack on the rule of law and on the state’s ability to protect society effectively.

Police added that violence against officers and attempts to obstruct their work would not be tolerated and would be dealt with immediately and firmly within the law.

The police leadership expressed its full support for officers, citing the professionalism, composure and dedication they show under difficult and dangerous conditions.

It said protecting frontline officers was necessary for the force to carry out its duties effectively, including protecting the public, enforcing the law and maintaining public order.

Police said they would continue to act decisively, professionally and consistently against all forms of offending, with public safety and the protection of society as their sole priority.
